FATTY ACID COMPOSITIONAL DATABASE
©2001 RMIT Lipid Research Group

This first release of the Fatty Acid Compositional Database includes fatty acid data (g/100g) to two decimal places for 1044 Australian foods. The data covers 11 saturated fatty acids, 7 MUFA, 10 PUFA (6 n-6, 4 n-3) and 3 trans fatty acids. This database supplements the NUTTAB 95 Fatty Acid Supplement.

Background
Over the last twenty years, research into the relative importance of individual fatty acids to specific aspects of vascular function has progressed significantly. A major area of investigation has been the role of the long chain (LC, 20+ carbons) PUFA of the n-3 and n-6 families in vascular disease. Except in certain foods, such as fish, these LC PUFA are present in only trace amounts.

The NUTTAB 95 Fatty Acid Supplement reported data to one decimal place. Though for fatty acids in large amounts this is an adequate situation, for trace amounts of certain fatty acids (particularly LC PUFA) this can be very misleading, especially when determining dietary intake of fatty acids.

Who is this data for?
Dietitians and researchers with some expertise in fatty acids will find this data useful.

Limitations
This database contains fatty acid compositional data on foods analysed by a range of research groups across Australia. The foods analysed and recorded were specifically relevant to studies being carried out by those researchers. Hence the foods and their composition data do not match those in NUTTAB95 or AusNut. This makes it necessary to re-enter data to obtain a complete nutrient profile.

Cost
The Fatty Acid Compositional Database can be used with the FoodWorks software at no cost by nutrition researchers and dietitians.

How to obtain the data

If you have already installed FoodWorks Version 3 then the fatty acid database is already available to you. To create a new FoodWorks database using the fatty acid data:

1. Start FoodWorks.
2. On the toolbar click New, then click Database.
4. Select "(Australia) Fatty Acids", then click OK.
5. Enter the name of the database you want to create, then click Save.

If you do not have FoodWorks Version 3 installed:

1. Download and install FoodWorks.
2. Start FoodWorks.
3. Follow the instructions shown.
4. When prompted, select "(Australia) Fatty Acids" as the type of database.

Obtaining an activation code
If you are already a FoodWorks Version 3 customer, the fatty acid database is already available to you.

If you are not a FoodWorks Version 3 customer, to continue using the fatty acid database after the 30-day trial has finished you will need to obtain a FoodWorks activation code. To do this, start FoodWorks, then click Purchase FoodWorks and follow the instructions shown.

The fatty acid data with FoodWorks is available at no cost.
