| Dr Janet Reynolds Dip.T; B.Ed; M.Ed.St.; PhD
Dr Janet Reynolds has a background in home economics education. She has taught in government and non-government schools in Australia, England and Papua New Guinea. and lectured at Queensland University of Technology for 5 years. In recent years she has been a consultant to the governments of Fiji and Sri Lanka in setting up home economics teacher preparation courses. Currently, Jan is Senior Education Officer in the Curriculum Innovation Branch of Education Queensland.
Jan’s academic qualifications are education based, having a Diploma of Teaching (Home economics), Bachelor of Education, Masters of Educational Studies and Doctor of Philosophy in nutrition education. Her doctoral thesis is entitled “An action-oriented, empowerment approach to school-based nutrition education”. It considers a way of teaching nutrition that empowers students to engage in health-promoting behaviours with respect to food, as opposed to just knowing about nutrition.
Jan was the project manager for Phase 2 of the National Nutrition Education in Schools project. This phase of the project included running train-the-trainer professional development workshops in all states and territories, publishing a newsletter to support effective school-based nutrition education, conducting research into the uptake of Food and Nutrition in Action (the Commonwealth’s professional development program for nutrition education), and organising professional development in all states and territories for tertiary educators and for community health professionals.

Jan has been involved in the development of many resources to support effective nutrition education, including: A guide to developing resources for good practice in food and nutrition education (1997); The Wonderful World of Vegies (2000); The Colourful World of Vegies (2000); and most recently Food Choices the IT Way (2001).
Reviewers Jan was ably assisted in the creation of the Food Choices materials through the reviews of practising Home Economics teachers from every state and territory, and the President of the Dietitians Association of Australia, Associate Professor Sandra Capra. The reviewers included Carol Elias, Sandra Fordyce-Voorham, Kathryn Holzheimer, Joanne Jayne, Helen Keith, Miriam McDonald, Lyn Peacock, Julie Taylor and Shannon McAlpine.
